Choral Union annual Christmas concert--
Felix & Johann -- A Table for Two: Magnificat!
Program order is:
Heilig by Felix Mendelssohn
Violin Concerto in D minor by Mendelssohn
Magnificat by Mendelssohn
Intermission
Brandenburg Concerto #3 by J.S. Bach
Magnificat by J.S. Bach
JS Bach composed his Magnificat for the Christmas service at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig in 1723. Almost a century later, at the age of 13 Felix Mendelssohn composed his Magnificat in the span of two weeks in the spring of 1822. He was studying the settings by JS Bach and wrote his music imitating his style in a traditional form. He was hoping it would be performed by the Berlin Choral Academy of which he was a member. However, Felix, although a genius, was only a student and the baroque style was out of vogue. We have nothing to indicate that his Magnificat was performed or published at any point during his lifetime, or at all until recent times.
The other works on the program are the Brandenburg Concerto #3 of JS Bach, for chamber orchestra, Heilig (Holy) an 8-part a capella motet by Mendelssohn, and another early work by Mendelssohn, his Violin Concerto in D Minor.
For this performance the Choral Union will have senior year students from Lawrence University singing the solo parts: Taylor Jacobson, soprano, Maura Cook, mezzo soprano, Alex Gmeinder, tenor, and Evan Bravos, baritone.
Adults-- $18
Students-- $12
